Jesus Himself was a master storyteller who used stories to apply Scriptural principles, empower people and to advance the kingdom of God. The First Love Discipleship Series has also taken this approach of blending Scriptural knowledge with stories. Knowledge and memory are linked by storytelling. Each section of the series is filled with a variety of stories about people and events that are applied in such a way as to make Scriptural truth memorable. When knowledge and memory come together, people have the power to change their lives and to advance the kingdom of God in their local community.
First Love is a series of four to six week discipleship material that places emphases on our spiritual growth and relationships, and empowering believers by explaining Scriptures in a manner that is easily understood and applied to practical Christian life, which is paramount for all Christians.
The benefit of the First Love series to the individual believer is that it uses the Reflective Journaling method of learning. Reflective journaling enhances learning through the process of writing and thinking about what you have learnt from the Scriptures. Reflective journaling answers the question: “What does this text mean to me personally as a believer?”
The benefit of the First Love series to the church is that the time-frame of each individual First Love book allows it to fit comfortably within the local church calendar without interfering with special events. We are living in a time-poor generation; the length of the First Love series does not exhaust the commitment of people as disciples and allows believers to fulfill other commitments such as family time.
The benefit of the First Love series to the pastor is that it is prepared material they can use as a foundation from which to conduct four to six weeks’ study of a particular epistle, which then becomes part of the church’s personal devotion and discipleship study.
The Christian life is all about pursuing our first love, Jesus Christ. The way that we pursue a relationship and glorious knowledge of Him is through the study of God’s word. My prayer is that, as you undertake this particular First Love book, the passion that you now have to know and pursue Christ will go to new heights of understanding, great personal spiritual depths of intimacy and a greater out-working in you than you have experienced before for the glory of the kingdom.
