Professional Supervision of Pastors

Pastoral professional supervision has been introduced to improve how we maintain health and well-being among pastors and the people with whom we come into contact. It has been found to be a significant promotor of high-level functioning and accountability at the professional level in many disciplines, and the pastoral community is now also able to benefit from this.

Supervision helps pastors to thrive in their role, helping to empower them to make good choices whilst practising holistic self-care.

Pastoral professional supervision is an intentional, regular conversation between a professional supervisor and a practitioner (minister) to focus on the ministry and any issues arising from that ministry. Supervision differs from mentoring. Mentoring is an informal relationship where a more experienced practitioner willingly shares their life experience with a mentoree. Supervision is a formal relationship with a trained supervisor. Supervision identifies the Supervisee as the “expert” who is best placed to work through the issues and challenges. The supervisor seeks to provide a place for the supervisee to explore and reflect on the issues and identify areas for restoration, growth, and ongoing monitoring. Pastoral professional supervision is based on the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2019).

.

Many denominations have implemented this recommendation, requiring ministers to undertake five to eight professional supervision sessions annually.
